Word of the day 27 August 2026
noun coined here
wage·war·i·fi·CA·tion
The reframing of a proceeding against you as a war being waged on you — a trial, an investigation, a policy dispute recast as an act of aggression, so that answering the charge becomes indistinguishable from being attacked.

Wagewarification deployed by a defendant against the court trying him.
Etymologywage war + -ification. The verb phrase is nominalised whole rather than the noun war alone, which is what keeps the aggression inside the word: not war happening, but war being waged, by someone, on purpose.
NoteThe word is one consonant and one vowel away from wage verification — a real phrase, the dull payroll document an employer files to confirm what someone earns. Everything after the first syllable is identical: the same five beats, the same stress on CA, the same -ification. That collision is the whole word. Verification is the thing a court actually does; wagewarification is what the accused calls it once he has decided the court is the aggressor. The two sit a hair apart in the mouth and at opposite ends of good faith. The evidence for the near-homophone is that a speech-to-text system, hearing this word spoken, transcribed it as “wage verification” — reaching for the real phrase because the sound is nearly the same. The machine's error is the proof. Shortening it to warification loses all of this: the wage, the agent doing the waging, and the collision. The long form is the word.
