As first written
FIGURINI
The original, by @bliss_nine. The headword above is where it settled — the intention was here first.

The division that does not exist, and the competitor standing in it: too big for Bikini, still too small for Figure, eligible for neither. The two class names folded into one word, so that the gap between them has something to be called.

FIGURINI — the rare state of being when you're too big for Bikini, but still too small for Figure.

EtymologyFigure + bikini: the head of the division above and the tail of the division below, welded so that both class names sit inside one word. Underneath, figure is Latin figūra, shape, from fingere, to form — the same verb that gives fiction and effigy. bikini is an atoll in the Marshall Islands, borrowed for the swimsuit in 1946 and for the division long after.

NoteThe word is a blend that turns out not to need to be one. Read it as Figure + bikini and it names the gap by jamming the two class names together. Read it as the diminutive — figura, figurino, figurine — and it says small Figure, which is the entry requirement it fails, in the one grammatical form built for falling short of a size. The joke and the etymology arrive at the same place from opposite directions, and the second route was already paved: Italian has had figurini for the fashion plate since the nineteenth century. The stress settles the allegiance. figure is FIG-ure, bikini is bi-KI-ni, and figurini is fi-gu-RI-ni — penultimate, exactly where bikini puts it. Measured against figure the beat has travelled two syllables, which this lexicon's oldest rule forbids; measured against bikini it has not moved at all. The word keeps the prosody of the division it has outgrown and cannot take on the prosody of the one it is reaching for. It is stuck in precisely the way it describes. The plural is the last of it. figurini is a plural with no singular in use — nobody is a figurino — so the word names a population rather than a person, which is what a division is. It is a class name for a class that was never convened.

Prior use of the form

Where this string was already doing work before it was put to this use. The sense below is the coinage; the spelling is not.

Italian — figurino, pl. figurini — source

A fashion plate: the sketch a garment is drawn on, and, said of a person, someone impeccably turned out. It is the diminutive of figura. The form has meant 'a small figure' in another language for two centuries.

English — figurine

A statuette; a figure reduced to something you can stand on a shelf. Same diminutive, arrived by way of French.
